A sanwing, showing its characteristic red plumage.

The Sanwing is a small bird common throughout Amallon, as far east as Matlisan. Typically the bird's plumage is a chesnut brown in the winter through to Midsummer. At this time the bird's feathers begin to redden, taking on the shade and hue of fresh blood by the beginning of Autumn and returning to brown by Midwinter.

The Sanwing is generally considered a sign of luck throughout Amallon, save when its feathers are red. Then it becomes a harbinger of death, war, battle and bloodshed.

The name, sanwing, derives in part from the Alindorean word "sanwe", meaning 'blood'.
